Water Taste and Odor

Chlorine Taste and Smell

Since the mid 1800's, chlorine has been used as a disinfectant to kill harmful bacteria in water - and not only to kill the bacteria in water itself, but in the pipes that carry it as well. Chlorine is essential to keeping water safe and the public healthy. Now, although the chlorine is necessary at the treatment plant and also within the distribution system, once the water reaches your home, or place of business, it is no longer a necessity.

The necessary chlorine that is added to your water is vital to public safety by stopping the spread of diseases through water contamination, but there is a price to pay. When you turn on the kitchen faucet to fill your glass and get a drink of water, you can smell the chlorine - and it doesn't taste any better than it smells. The chlorine in the water also dries out your skin and hair, fades your clothing (remember, bleach is made of chlorine), and dries out the seals in your water-using appliances like your dish washer, hot water heater, and washing machine. The result of dried seals is shorter life span of the appliance - which ends up costing you money.

Taste and Odor

Water. Pure, clean water. In it's purest state, water is colourless, tasteless and odourless. So, if your water tastes funny or has a strange odor, then you owe it to yourself and your family to find out why.

Earthy or musty taste and odor:

If your water has an earthy or musty taste and odor, the problem is usually due to decayed vegetation and are typically associated with different forms of algae. Algae is usually found when the water source is supplied from a surface supply. There is nothing in algae that is toxic, but the taste and odor associated with algae can be unpleasant.

Rotten egg smell:

Have you experienced a "rotten egg" smell when you turn on the tap? Then you are probably suffering from an infusion of hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide is a colourless, corrosive gas that has a very characteristic odor like that of rotten eggs. The rotten egg smell is usually found in groundwater supplies and is often associated with hot water heaters. Hydrogen sulfide occurs naturally from deep in the ground, but it can also be produced by sulfate-reducing bacteria. If Hydrogen sulfide is present in enough quantities, it can effect the taste of your food, or anything else that comes in contact with water from your faucet. It could even cause your hair or clothing to have an unpleasant odor. Hydrogen sulfide can also accelerate the corrosion of metal parts in your appliances, such as dish washer, washing machine and hot water heater. With an onsite test from your local Riverside, San Bernardino, or Orange County Kinetico distributor, we can find out if you are suffering from an infusion of hydrogen sulfide.

Metallic Taste:

Does your water have a metallic taste? Well, just as the name implies, a metallic taste to your water indicates the presence of metals such as iron, copper, manganese or zinc. While iron and manganese, which occur naturally and are predominantly found in groundwater supplies, copper and zinc

usually come from older plumbing which is corroding, although an aging water distribution system can also be the culprit.
